Personally, Beauty and the Beast. Maybe because it came out the year I was born, but also because it’s absolutely outstanding.
The whole story is just brilliant, a wonderful adaptation of a traditional tale, with the personal touch of Disney.
Also, it has my two favorite main characters, Belle and Beast.
I’ve always seen Belle as the perfect role model. She loves his father and would do anything for him, even giving up her dreams and life just to save him. She loves culture and books, and doesn’t care about what people think about her.
But the most wonderful thing about her is that she doesn’t prejudge people. She can forgive the mistakes and is the only one who can transform a “mean, coarse and unrefined” Beast into a Prince Charming. And the best thing? She didn’t fall in love with Beast the first time she sees him, which is what usually happens in Disney movies. She falls in love when she gets to know him, when she realizes that he’s able to learn how to change and be a better person thanks to her, that he’s able to love.
And that’s why Prince Adam is my favorite Disney male. He learns, he changes, you can see a real transformation, not only of his body, but of his soul. The way he lets Belle free, even when he’s deeply in love with her and knows that she’s the only way to break the spell just kills me every time.
They are the perfect example of how to love without looking for anything in return.
About the movie itself, well, the drawing is incredible. From the landscapes and the castle, to every single character. How to forget about the genius Glen Keane, making one of his most difficult works with Beast and that final transformation?
And of course the soundtrack is just perfect. Alan Menken’s songs and scores are just magical. And well, sadly it’s the last complete work of Howard Ashman, which did his best with this movie, even working from the hospital.
That last score, the Transformation one, is incredibly moving and deep. And I think it’s because Alan was really touched about the health condition of Howard, and obviously that was reflected in his music.
Thanks to the time when the film was made, a time when Disney began to shine again, but also a difficult time with the loss of Howard, Beauty and the Beast is not only a beautiful story about two people falling in love, but a masterpiece that I think will be remembered for a long, long time.
Oh woah, don’t ask me these things because when I start talking about Disney, I cannot stop! ;)
